Introduction to UNIX

Basic Introduction to understand Unix:-

Basic Introduction of Unix

1. Initial step towards development of UNIX,originated form the MULTICS project.

2. During the mid-1960sMIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Bell Labs and General Electric were working in a joint collaboration to develop a time sharing operating system for a GE-645mainframecomputer.

3. Its name was MULTICS (MULTiplexed Information and Computer Service).

4. MULTICS project however withdrawal by the researchers because of its complexity and doesn't make desired output.

5. But Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritche, Douglas Mcllroy and Joe Ossanna who decided to innovative and re-implement their past experience and apply in a new projects and developed UNICS (UNiplexed Information Computing System) at AT&T Bell Laboratories.

6. Later on UNICS name changed to UNIX.

7. Originally UNIX was written in Assembly language, but later with the help of Dennis Ritche (Founder of C language), it programmed in C Language.

"1st version of UNIX used in PDP-7 in "assembly language".
Later in 1971, they rewrite 4th version of UNIX in "C language" used in PDP-11.
PDP-7 &PDP-11 are series of Programmed Data Processor.
It is a computing device made and sold by Digital Equipment Corporation (American Computer Industry)."

8. It is a multi-user and multitasking Operating system.

9. Due to its flexible and portable nature, it is mostly accepted in large networking application, scientific application, engineering workstations... etc.

10.This is a command oriented Operating system. We can enable graphical user interface via x window system, similar to other GUI based operating system.

11.Unix have very compatible environment for programming development (pascal, java, C++, Cobol...).
12. It is a closed source operating system which means the source code of Unix is not freely available.

13.Two main version of Unix is

1.System V      2.BSD
